The application of wireless telecommunication and networking technology to health care has significant potential to improve the patient’s quality of life, and to reduce mortality and morbidity. Small and portable devices such as mobile phones and PDAs allow complex cooperation and communication patterns that were not foreseeable some time ago. The multitude of wireless networking technologies prevalent today provide the research community with a wide spectrum of possibilities for several health care applications. High-speed 3G digital cellular services, personal area networks (PANs) , local area networks (LANs) and metropolitan area networks (MANs) have great potential to propel and envision such development. Real time, streaming multimedia, video and voice promise a virtual experience. These technologies are becoming pervasive and so will their use in health care.

Multimedia Networks Laboratory is driving towards the next generation mobile Telemedicine applications. We envision significant communication needs and multimedia experience for futuristic health care applications and are developing state-of-the-art solutions for such demanding scenarios. Our contribution lies in building systems and network architectures, providing  medical multimedia information, and optimizing the solutions for the medical domain.

There are several ongoing projects related to wireless networking and multimedia delivery in different areas of Telemedicine. We are collaborating with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston on a number of projects.
